When Not to Copy Your Competitors
By: Andrew Michaels
There is an old expression that states that, if you come in second, you are no better than the first loser. This is the perfect way to describe the cutthroat environment in today's business world. If you are not the leader, you are nothing.
But how do you become the leader of your industry? Many executives look at the things their competitors are doing well, and try to copy them. This can be a good way to expand your business, and maybe open yourself up to techniques that you had not previously considered, but it will not make you the industry leader. Think about it: how can you pass someone if you are following them?
In order to become the true leader in your industry, you have to think independently and with a broad view of the situation. Do not fall into the trap of thinking of your company only in terms of what it does now. Instead, think of what it can do in the future. Just because you one of the leading producers of paper does not mean that you can't eventually become the world's leading manufacturer of cell phones (just ask Nokia).
Think about all the ways in which your company is different (and preferably better) than your competitors. If you can't think of any, then you better make yourself better than them in some way, and do it fast! Take the things that make you better than your competitors and accentuate them to your customers. Focus your advertising efforts on those things that set you apart. Design a brand new, full color brochure printing (done by a quality commercial printer) and give them out to everyone. Change your stores signage and overall look to emphasize the qualities that put you ahead of other stores like you.
In short, try being different that everyone else, instead of trying to be like everyone else.
And, throughout this time when you are trying to separate yourself, plan ahead. Think of ways in which your business can expand in its current market. Imagine other markets into which you can delve in the future. Never stop thinking ahead - even way ahead. You never know when the current market situation will make a drastic change. You may find yourself on the top of the world today, only to find that nobody wants your product tomorrow. You have to have a plan to deal with that type of event, and you have to have it now, before you need it. If you are only trying to copy your competitors, then you will all go down together.
So stop thinking like your competitors, and start thinking independently. You might just find that you are the only one left standing when the dust settles.
