What is Offsite Data Storage?

By: Terry Fitzroy

What is offsite data storage? If you don't know, you're probably at risk. Offsite data storage is the idea of taking documents, and other data and information that is important to your business or family and storing it in a secure place away from your home, or office in an attempt to have a back up in case of an emergency. Offsite data storage very well may save your entire lively hood should there be a fire, or other unexpected crises. Especially if your computers burn down and your file cabinets melt. If this happens to you, and you have not had everything your business must have backed up, and stored elsewhere for safe keeping, you are playing with fire, hopefully not literally.

There are plenty of businesses that offer guides and resources for how to store your data somewhere else. If you do a Google search for "offsite data storage" you'll find several businesses looking to offer you storage. It's actually a booming business, and rightfully so. When you bought your house, or moved into the apartment you live in, did you give a neighbor, or close friend a copy of the house key? Did you give someone else a copy of your car key? No? Well, what if you get locked out? How do you plan to get in? It's the same concept with offsite data storage. It is very much like "offsite key placement". That way you will be able get back into your house or car by calling a friend. In this case however, you will be able to get all of your essential data backed up by another company should you loose it.

Offsite data storage is equivalent to a fire escape plan. It isn't that schools expect to be set on fire, but in case it ever happens, you better believe that those kids better know where to go. That's why they practice! Your business should be treated the same way. And not only your business, but anything else that's important. How about your birth certificates? High school diplomas? And college degrees? Those are all important files that you may need copies of somewhere outside of your home.

Take other preventative measures as well. A fire isn't the only way that you could lose every bit of information that you need on a daily basis to run your business. How about anti virus software? Adware and Spyware removal software? Web filters? All of the above. Don't just prepare for the worst, prepare to fight against it. Does your house or apartment have a fire alarm? How about sprinklers? Ok, you get the pictures, its no different with your home, or office. You need lots of preventative actions set in place to protect your assets, and that's exactly what offline data storage is all about, and what it will do for you in your time of need. Get your data protected as soon as possible! It could mean the difference between your livelihood being lost or secured.
