Using Candles Safely To Avoid A Home Fire
By: Aydan Corkern
It is hard to say how many centuries that candles have been used in homes to produce light in the darkness. Even today when we have all the light that we want because of electricity, we still love to have candles disbursed in various places around the house because of the many colors they can be made in and the wonderful fragrances they are infused with today.
They are of course, very decorative as well. Candles are relatively inexpensive and will add a warm romantic glow to any room in the house. They are one of the elements that people use to make a house feel like a home. Candle making is a hobby that many people enjoy doing. They are making something that is not only useful, but also beautiful to look at and smell. You can find a variety of candles in almost any home store or department store you go into these days and that is because they are so popular.
Candles also can still serve the original purpose that they were originally created for which is to give off light. When there is a power failure for some reason, you can light a few candles and they will burn for hours. You can achieve the same affect with a flashlight, but it is not nearly as romantic as candle light. The one draw back about candles as opposed to flashlights is the fact that you can set your home on fire and that aspect of candles is not so romantic.
You must know how to use candles safely to prevent such an unfortunate tragedy. Many homes have been burned to the ground because someone was careless with a candle. Never place a candle anywhere near curtains, furniture, electric items, or any thing flammable. Never put candles where children or even pets can knock them over. If you use wall sconces to display lit candles, make sure they are not so near the wall as to catch it on fire. Always use a candle holder of some kind that will keep the candle from toppling over if it were to burn unevenly. Most of all never leave a burning candle unattended.
You can use candles safely in the home if you follow these simple rules and just use a little common sense. Remember to always extinguish candles before going to bed at night and before you leave home. Candles can be a good smelling addition to your home or they can be a very dangerous object. The candles themselves can not cause your home to catch on fir, only the people that light them and are responsible for putting them out.
