Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA is a sport that derives from a variety of martial arts and fighting techniques. Contrary to most other sports, both striking and grappling is allowed, whether the fighters are on the ground or standing up. The Ultimate Fighting Championship was formed in 1993, launching MMAs popularity. Initially, the UFC operated under the basis of finding the best martial arts moves for real unarmed combat situations. There were very few rules or worries about safety.
