How to Create Your Own Aromatherapy Candles
By: Robert Watson
The oldest method of aromatherapy is in the form of candle burning. Close to six thousand years ago the ancient Chinese began burning joss sticks (incense) made from aromatic herbs to honor their gods and ancestors. Aromatherapy is a fragrant world of unseen energies.
Flowers, fruits, leaves and bark are used to create the essential oils found in aromatherapy. Highly concentrated amounts of oil are taken and their therapeutic abilities are used to improve overall well being.
The amount of coloring and scent used to make your own aromatherapy candles is up to you. Mixing different oils together allows you to experiment with the different scents. When it comes to the candle molds you can buy them or make them yourself (such as paper cups), additional supplies include wicks, Beeswax, Paraffin, crayons, oils and a double boiler. The green segment of the consumer market notes that soy wax is healthier for you and the environment, than Parrafin as it burns cleaner, lasts longer, is non-toxic and is 100% biodegradable.
On top of the mold place a pencil or stick with the excess wick wrapped around it in order to keep it in place. In order to melt the paraffin and beeswax combine them in a double boiler. Placing some crayon shavings in the wax will add color to your aromatherapy candle. Use a carrot peeler as a quick way to add crayon shavings to the wax. To avoid the possibility of your candle smelling like a crayon, go easy on the shavings. Be wary of adding too much of the oil, you can always add more, but you will not be able to add less, meaning the scent may be overwhelming. After allowing your candle to cool cut the wick to inch. Placing aromatherapy candles around your house results in a relaxing atmosphere. Yes it is much easier and less time consuming to purchase your candles, but it is not nearly as personal as creating your own fragrance.
The ideal way to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere around your home is to place aromatherapy candles throughout. It is well worth the effort to make your own aromatherapy candles so that you will be in control of the fragrance and color. Therapeutic and relaxing is how some individuals describe the candle making process. If you need a special gift for someone in your life, a hand-made aromatherapy candle shows him or her how special they are to you.
