Free Bingo; the Progression of a Hobby

By: Shaun Parker

It's believed that our modern game of bingo evolved from a lottery game played in Italy in the 16th century. The idea of playing simple games for money and other prizes was immediately popular in Italy and the game, known as Giuco de Lotto, spread across Europe where it began to take on different forms.

While Giuci de Lotto is still played in Italy, modern bingo made its real transformation in France during the 18th century where it began to physically resemble what we know now: the playing card, daubing tokens and called numbers. Free bingo was never high in public demand, since people always wanted to play for real money or prizes doled out by the lottery groups, but it did nevertheless flourish in homes as a family game where the household decided on its own forms of winnings.

As the size of the cards varied, the patterns in question changed and the format of play was experimented with. It was in the United States (Georgia in particular) that bingo made its final metamorphosis and was originally called Beano.

As the story goes, it was due to an excited mistake by a winning lady that the name changed, since instead of shouting out 'Beano' as the custom was, she misspoke and yelled 'bingo'. Thus, the game was truly born!

Growing Bigger and Better Online

Bingo was moved into special halls where people congregated for hours, looking for a lucky card and hoped to go home with a jackpot - the game became synonymous with the retirement crowd and the elementary school classroom where it was used to try to trick children into learning. The only forms of free bingo were generally homemade and weren't intended to give out free money, at least not in any generous amount. Nowadays, however, with the ever-expanding world of online gambling, we can find free bingo games to our hearts content and actually win some money!

How is this possible? It's a pretty simple fact that if you sign up to use an online gambling site they will offer you a few freebies in appreciation; free bingo comes with most new online bingo accounts and the point of these is really just to help you get to know the website and realise that it's your favourite one of all time. Regardless of whether it is or not, you can cash in on free bingo at least once before you decide whether you like that particular game or not.

In many cases, with speciality online bingo sites, regular players will have more access to free bingo games because they are being rewarded for their time and money. The game has come a long way from being played with beans and flimsy cardboard. Isn't it great to know that sometimes you really can win money for free?
