Elderly Health Care Provider

By: GoldenOrchard

"Dad", I said as I watched him struggle to bring the glass of water to his lips. "You need to see a doctor." "Never felt better in my life," sputtered my father. "I don't need a doctor. Haven't seen one in 30 years." When I heard those words, my heart sank. I knew then that I had a job ahead of me - finding a Colorado elder care provider for my dad.

I knew I wanted a doctor that my father would feel comfortable with, and wouldn't mind confessing his symptoms to. Statistics have shown that how well a patient and his or her doctor get along is associated with the quality of care the patient receives, and can make a difference in the outcome of the patient's health problems. I knew that there had to be a Denver elder care provider that would fit these criteria. So, I began to ask around to see if anyone knew of a doctor who had a practice that dealt with the elderly. A friend of mine told me about her mother's doctor... raved about him, really. I decided to take my Dad to this doctor so we could find out what, if anything was wrong with him.

It turned out that my choice of a Denver elderly health care provider was a fine one. He listened closely to everything my Dad had to say, and also answered my questions. I was asked to step out of the room during the examination, of course, and sat in the waiting area thinking that Denver elder health care was the finest in the world. It wasn't too long before the doctor's nurse came into the waiting area to lead me back to the exam room where my Dad and the doctor were sitting. The doctor was gazing kindly at my Dad, who was looking a bit stunned when I walked in.

He had a good reason for looking that way, I found. The doctor informed me that my Dad had the first stages of Alzheimer's disease, and that there was no kind of cure for it. Medications could help to control the symptoms, but no one really knew how long it would be before Dad would need Colorado Alzheimer's caregivers on a round the clock basis. It could be a year.... 5 years... or as long as 20 years. We would just have to play the waiting game to find out.

The doctor tactfully suggested to me that it might be a good idea to put Dad's name on a waiting list at one of the assisted living facilities in the area. This way, while living in Denver, Alzheimer's dementia could surface one day, and we could possibly get Dad into the facility as early as the next day, since we had been on the list. Once I got over the initial shock of knowing that my father had an incurable disease, I realized that the doctor was right. Anyone who is faced with a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's needs to make plans on how to care for the patient in the future.

Your elderly health care provider can help you to find the proper kind of facility for your senior family member. It is not an easy decision, but it is one that will help not only the patient, but the whole family. Everyone will handle the situation better when they know that their loved one is in a place where they will be looked after properly.
