By: Osmund Aft

Flooded basement is a major problem that you would have to contend with if you stay in areas where there is heavy rainfall for a considerable part of the year. Basements are areas in our houses that are used for storage and are generally left unattended. When there is heavy shower water gets in and remains there unnoticed until it results to flooded basement. This often results in the damage of our possessions. It is a quite an unpleasant experience to be a victim of a flooded basement. However with the help of a few guidelines you would be able to handle the situation much more easily.

There are many ways the basements can get flooded. It is possible that water enters through the cracks in the basement. This occurs mostly during the times of heavy rain or snow. vCertain home improvement techniques such as adding or replacing gutters would draw the water away and be able to get rid of flooded basement problems. Other options include using sump pumps or similar such equipments that are used to close any potential problem areas. You can do this yourself or get professional help.

To stop any leakage from the inside of the basement, it is a good option to coat the inside area with paints that come with a sealant.
Another good way to start water damage restoration is to notice the water patterns in the basement. You can check where it floods more frequently. It is best to avoid those areas so as to directly avoid flooded basement. You should also note the incline of the floor of the basement. Basements are at times uneven so it is better to store things at a higher spot. The water would flow down to the lower portions and a drain can be attached to the lower portions to carry off the water away from the otherwise flooded basement.

If it is that you have a basement drain it is important that you check the drainage path. Most of the basements have drains to remove excess water. You would have to keep an open path from the water problem areas in the flooded basement to the drain. This will allow the water to flow to the drain without any obstruction in its path.

Also it might be possible that water flows back from the drain due to sewage problems or for any other reason. It is therefore best to avoid storing anything near the drain.

There are many structural damages that might happen due to a flooded basement. There might be buckled walls, heaved floors and settled floors. When there is horizontal cracking on the walls it is a sign that you have buckled walls. If the cracks are minor you can do without any repairs but if the damage is serious, repairs should be done without delay. When there are vertical cracks it indicates settled walls or floors. The cracks that develop can be located in small areas or throughout the structure. There are special equipments that are required for repairs. A floor that is seriously cracked or is far removed from its original position is known heaved floor. In such cases investing on a new floor is the best option.
