Doing What The Romans Do
By: Gaizka Pujana
Many people would recommend finding a convenient place to stay in Rome before setting off on travels to Italy. If a traveler has already arranged a hotel room or other place of lodging in advance, then there is no need to waste any valuable sightseeing time in looking for a suitable place to stay. This may all be settled in advance.
The Coloseum
An attractive site and a real must see while in Rome is the Coloseum. This constitutes such an important part of Rome's history and culture that it should not be missed by any tourist to the area. The Coloseum is an amphitheatre situated in the center of Rome and is believed to be the largest of its kind that was ever built. The Coloseum is a wonderful preservation of the Roman Empire and today, the structure serves as an excellent example of Roman architecture.
The Coloseum was first known by the name of the Flavian Amphitheatre and this creation was begun during the period of 70 and 72 AD. This large amphitheatre was originally used for public events and contests. The design of this arena was intended to hold approximately 50,000 spectators for various forms of entertainment. A variety of different types of events were held in the amphitheatre, including contests between gladiators and wild beasts. It is reported that spectators were seated in the tiers of the amphitheatre according to their class. It is believed that the lower a person's class, the higher they would be seated. In its original form, the amphitheatre contained several passageways that enabled people to fill and exit the arena very quickly.
Guided tours of the Coloseum are available and these present the visitor with a detailed insight into the history of the famous ruins. Such tours are available in different languages and produce a recommended and informative way to visit the Coloseum. A view of the Coloseum at night provides a magnificent sight as it is lit up and lights can be seen shining through the Coloseum's arches. The Coloseum can be viewed from tables of nearby restaurants and cafes allowing the traveler to breathe in the atmosphere and experience magical Rome.
Unfortunately the Coloseum has been damaged over the years, notably by the occurrence of earthquakes. Although the Coloseum is considered to be in ruined condition, this is still one of Rome's top tourist attractions. Legend also states that as long as the Coloseum stands then so will Rome. The myth also maintains that when Rome will fall so will the world. However, it should be noted that the intelligent and skillful engineering of this structure has ensured centuries of strong standing and this impressive building remains in the heart of Rome.
